American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery Announces New Officers

Wausau, WI  Deiter Manstein, MD, PhD was introduced as President of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS) at the Annual Conference on March 29, 2019.  ASLMS is the world's largest professional organization dedicated to promoting research, education and high standards of clinical care in the field of medical laser and energy-based applications.

"Thank all of you for the trust you had in me, for giving me the opportunity to serve as your president," said Manstein. "This is the society I am most passionate about. If there is one single thing on my agenda for the next year, it is really to emanate this passion and thank everybody for being here. My heart is to really keep all your passion alive, being like the torch to get out the mission and spread the excitement about the Society."  

Dr. Manstein graduated from the University of Münster, Germany. He completed a research fellowship at the Wellman Center of Photomedicine and a special clinical dermatology-training track at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is currently Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School and heads his research laboratory at the Cutaneous Biology Research Center at Massachusetts General Hospital. His research is focused on innovative use of energy-based devices, mainly within the area of dermatology. Many of the major current device treatments in dermatology are the direct result of his inventions and research. Notable examples are fractional photothermolysis and non-invasive fat removal by cold (selective cryolipolysis). He also contributed significantly to advances in the area of hair removal and laser-tissue interaction. Dr. Manstein received multiple honors and awards, including the Horace Furumoto Innovator Award and the Ellet H. Drake Award from the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. 

Dr. Manstein succeeds Eric Bernstein, MD, MSE, who now serves as the Society’s Past President. The 2019-20 ASLMS Executive Committee also includes Henry Chan, MD, PhD, FRCP, elected as Vice President, President-Elect Thomas E. Rohrer, MD, Secretary Suzanne L. Kilmer, MD, Treasurer E. Victor Ross, MD and Historian J. Stuart Nelson, MD, PhD.

Other newly elected board positions include Board Representatives for:  Laser Medicine -  Arisa Ortiz, MD; Industrial R & D -  Frederick Beddingfield III, MD, PhD;  Laser Safety - Brian Biesman, MD; and Laser Surgery - Omar Ibrahimi, MD, PhD.
