Objectives

EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

This course will provide participants with an understanding of lasers and other light energy based technology and their use in clinical aesthetic applications.

PARTICIPANTS

This course is designed for physicians, other clinicians, scientists, and individuals in industry who currently use or are investigating use of lasers in their practice. This course is beneficial for anyone who wishes to have a deeper understanding of how lasers work and then apply that knowledge to achieve optimum clinical outcomes.

BACKGROUND REQUIREMENTS

Minimal background and experience in the field of laser and other light-based technology and their application in health care.

INSTRUCTIONAL CONTENT AND/OR EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Laser safety and laser complications - By addressing laser safety and reviewing laser complications, how to avoid them, and how to remedy them.
  • How to deal with dissatisfied patients - By discussing the approach to the patient, setting appropriate expectations, and dealing with unanticipated adverse results.
  • How to get the most of your chosen laser or light device - By emphasizing the best use of individual lasers by optimizing treatment parameters, carefully monitoring tissue endpoints, and presenting innovative ways to use lasers and devices in combination.
  • How to incorporate cosmetic injectables into a cosmetic Laser practice - By discussing cosmetic injectables along with laser and light devices.

Goldberg, Gerald N.MDDr. Gerald N. Goldberg is an internationally recognized dermatologist with unique experience in laser surgery spanning more than 3 decades. Being board-certified in pediatrics and dermatology he has a special interest and expertise in the Laser treatment of vascular birthmarks in children as well as in laser skin resurfacing. Dr. Goldberg has lectured nationally and internationally in three languages on four continents on a variety of Laser related topics. He is a frequent speaker and session moderator for the ASLMS. He speaks French and Spanish. Currently Dr. Goldberg is certified in more than 30 Laser and light modalities. He brings his patients expertise based on more than 35,000 Laser surgeries to date. Over more than 35 years Dr. Goldberg has been in private practice at Pima Dermatology in Tucson, Arizona and works in a state of the art facility providing comprehensive dermatologic services spanning medical, surgical, cosmetic, and laser dermatology. Dr. Goldberg graduated cum laude from Princeton University in 1973. In 1978 he obtained his medical degree from the State University of New York at Syracuse, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He completed his residency in Pediatrics in 1981 and a fellowship in Dermatology in 1983 from the University of Arizona. Dr. Goldberg is a clinical professor of dermatology and pediatrics at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center where he has been involved in resident and medical student education. He is a preceptor for Laser physician education for both the ASDS and ASLMS. He has been involved in a number of dermatologic societies having been a past president of the Tucson and Sonoran dermatology societies in addition to being active in a variety of national dermatologic committees and a reviewer for a number of national Dermatology journals.. He is the immediate past President of the Arizona State Dermatologic and Dermatologic Surgery Society and has been on the board of directors and multiple committees for the ASLMS. Dr Goldberg is the 2017 recipient of the ASLMS Leon Goldman award for lifetime achievement in Laser Surgery,and the 2019 recipient of the ASLMS Ellet Drake Award for Laser innovation.. He has been honored with the presentation of the Nancy Esterly Memorial lecture for the Society for Pediatric Dermatology meeting in February 2019. Over the years Dr Goldberg has been instrumental in local community activities such as skin cancer screenings as well as doing volunteer medical missions in Mexico and Central America. He is married and has two children and two beautiful grandchildren. His son currently is a board certified Dermatologist and Dermatopathologist in New York City, and his daughter has a doctorate in Public Health and resides in the bay area where she is a health management consultant. His hobbies are photography, tennis, sailing, running, cycling and hiking.
Nelson, J. StuartMD, PhDJ. Stuart Nelson, M.D., Ph.D., is Medical Director of the Beckman Laser Institute and Medical Clinic (BLIMLC), and Professor of Surgery and Biomedical Engineering, at the University of California Irvine. His research is interdisciplinary in nature combining expertise in optics, electrical and mechanical engineering, and medicine. Dr. Nelson has published more than 340 scientific articles and 15 book chapters. Dr. Nelson has received substantial independent grant support for his research program from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the form of a R29 FIRST Award, K-24 Mid-Career Clinical Investigator Award, and seven R01 Independent Researcher Awards. Additional support has been obtained by him in the form of a Biomedical Engineering Research Grant from the Whitaker Foundation, Grant for Innovative Technology from the Biomedical Research Technology Program, Career Development Award from the Dermatology Foundation and grants from the Office of Naval Research, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Department of Energy and private industry. He has filed 26 disclosures and been awarded 15 patents from the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Dr. Nelson founded the UC Irvine Vascular Birthmarks and Malformations Diagnostic and Treatment Center (VBMDTC) and serves as its Director. The center is committed to the clinical management of port wine stains, hemangiomas and other complex and disfiguring vascular malformations. Dr. Nelson served as President of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS) 2001-2002. He was Editor-in-Chief of the ASLMS journal Lasers in Surgery and Medicine 2005-2015. Finally, in addition to Dr. Nelson's research, teaching, and faculty responsibilities at the BLIMC, he is engaged in a fulltime university-based direct clinical practice with a focus on serving patients with pediatric port wine stain birthmarks, hemangiomas and other vascular malformations as well as different types of skin disorders amenable to laser treatment.
Ross, E. VictorMDE. Victor Ross, M.D., CAPT MC, USN (ret) attended Mississippi State University where he graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in physics. He obtained his medical degree from the Tulane University School of Medicine where he was a junior year inductee into Alpha Omega Alpha. Following internship, Dr. Ross went to Sasebo, Japan as a General Medical Officer. In 1992, he completed a three-year dermatology residency at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda. In 1994, he was the first Navy-sponsored fellow in photomedicine and lasers at the Massachusetts General Hospital. While there, he conducted basic research experiments and human clinical trials in photodynamic therapy and novel laser applications in dermatology. He was honored as the 2001 Navy Recipient of the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff Award for excellence in Military Medicine. Dr. Ross is presently the director of the Laser and Cosmetic Dermatology Center at Scripps Clinic in San Diego. He also served on the boards of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (president in 2008), the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, and the American Society for Cosmetic Dermatology and Aesthetic Surgery. His special interests are fractional laser skin rejuvenation, photodynamic therapy, non-ablative skin remodeling, laser management of scars, laser treatment of acne, and laser hair reduction in dark skinned patients. He is the author of over 100 articles and nine book chapters. Presently, Dr. Ross is investigating novel approaches in pigment quantification as well as conducting comparative trials of picosecond laser sources, novel RF technologies in skin rejuvenation, and laser assisted acne treatments.
Tanghetti, Emil A.MDEmil Tanghetti, MD is a dermatologist who practices at the Center for Dermatology and Laser Surgery in Sacramento, CA. He has been a clinical professor of Dermatology at the University of California, Davis. His practice consists of clinical dermatology and clinical research with special interest in laser surgery, acne, psoriasis and cosmetic dermatology. He has published over 150 articles and lectures on these topics.
