Position Description

Position Title: Editor-in-Chief
Classification: Volunteer/Non-Profit Editorial/Board Leadership 
Reports To: ASLMS Board of Directors
Term: Three to Five Years. This position is eligible for renewal pending performance review.



Position Summary

(Subject to the Society’s contract with the journal’s publisher and subject to the authority of the Society's Board of Directors)

The Editor-in-Chief of Lasers in Surgery and Medicine supervises all aspects of the publication, including 1) format, 2) timely review of articles, 3) initiation of special issues or reviews, 4) determination in consultation with the publisher the number of issues per year and pages per issue, 4) coordinate the active involvement of the associate editors with direct responsibility for specific areas of the journal (review articles, feature articles, medical journal abstracts, book reviews, letters to the editor, etc.), 6) communication with authors and resolution of disputes about suitability for publication, and 7) compliance with the publisher’s procedures and requirements. 



Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serve three to five-year term with an option for renewal at the discretion of ASLMS Board of Directors not to exceed 10 years in total
  • Strives to enhance the excellent reputation and high quality of published works in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine
  • Meet the annual benchmarks
  • Responsible for solicitation, evaluation and editing of scientific and other editorial material
  • Reviews and approves commercial advertising, monitors costs and distribution and approves gratuitous subscriptions
  • Nominate Associate Editors and appoint Editorial Board Members who are acknowledged experts in lasers in surgery and medicine
  • Serve as Chairperson of the Editorial Board
  • Maintain an editorial office
  • Hire and supervise a Managing Editor
  • Work closely with Wiley Periodicals, Inc., publisher of Lasers in Surgery and Medicine and serves as the Society’s contact person with the publisher
  • Serve as ex-officio member of ASLMS Board of Directors
  • Attends the Society’s Board of Directors meetings as required
  • Provides timely reports to the Board of Directors as requested
  • Meets with Editorial Board and provides a report during the Society’s Annual Conference
  • During the final portion of their term, work with the person designated to become Editor-in-Chief of the Society’s journal to facilitate continuity and an orderly transition

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Must be an ASLMS member in good standing.
  • Must have an awareness of all aspects of lasers in surgery and medicine.
  • Must be an experienced administrator with strong organizational and people skills.
  • Must have experience in editing of medical and/or scientific publications.
  • Must be actively engaged in either the use of lasers in clinical practice and/or research in the use of lasers and other related technologies.
