ASLMS Mentorship Program Projects

Mentorship projects may be chosen from the list of board-directed initiatives below, or created by the mentee, and should benefit the ASLMS membership in some way. Project initiatives should reflect ASLMS’ mission and vision.

Review the dangers of performing laser and device treatments by non-qualified individuals as opposed to board-certified and trained professionals
Review the treatment of nevoid hamartomas with laser and/or energy-based devices based on size, anatomic location, and skin type
Use of regenerative medicine in aesthetics (besides hair restoration) - A review
A review of the use of PRF in tissue augmentation and it's efficacy

Information-Based Projects

Build up a series of videos or PowerPoint lectures on various procedures our members perform
Create a set of videos geared at patients explaining the qualifications of a laser physician or midlevel supervised by physicians
Build a webpage or living document on the ASLMS website that stores a comprehensive collection of the user manuals for all devices from all industry partners of ASLMS 
Organize a board review competition event to take place at ASLMS
Further develop networking with residents across the country
Development of a virtual DEI series of educational videos that can be posted and disseminated virtually (include topics like diversifying your staff, diversifying your patient base, managing micro/macroaggressions in the workplace, connecting with patients of different backgrounds, diversifying your inner circle, diversity in research, etc.) 
Develop a networking program to connect residents, clinicians, and scientists to industry partners via networking events, meetings, etc.
Create a monthly lecture series on lasers and devices for residents and fellows in training
Create a guide on the step-by-step Fellowship process and provide information on how to apply
Practice questions specific to the Board Exam: a way to incorporate with Instagram Lives

Treatment Photography Standardization Protocol - Develop or refine a photography protocol to ensure consistent before/after images (standard backgrounds, lighting, angles) to support documentation, marketing, and legal protection
Reducing No-Show Rates in Medical Aesthetics - Analyze current scheduling practices and patient reminders, then test interventions (e.g., SMS reminders, deposits, educational touchpoints) to reduce missed appointments
Pain Control Protocols Across Modalities - Compare patient experiences across microneedling, RF, laser, and injectables using various pain management approaches (topicals, vibration, distraction), and build a best-practice guide
Treatment Stacking Protocols: What Works Best and Why? - Research outcomes and satisfaction with specific energy-based treatment stacks and create case-based recommendations.
Building Cross-Disciplinary Protocols with Dermatology or Plastic Surgery - Develop pre/post-treatment protocols collaboratively for shared patients (e.g., lasers post-bleph, fillers post-rhino)
Improving the Aesthetic Consultation Process - Map and analyze the current consult workflow; test new scripting, visual aids, or digital forms to improve conversion and education
Diversity in Skin Typing and Treatment Planning - Audit Fitzpatrick-based protocols and build a more inclusive guide for assessing and treating patients with diverse skin tones safely
Laser Safety Officer Mentorship - While working with lasers, assist with documentation audits, signage, eyewear protocols, and beam path safety to build real compliance readiness

Review of facial/upper neck skin tightening and rejuvenation with non-ablative radiofrequency technologies
